The Government of Canada recently announced that International students are no longer restricted to working only 20 hours per week. This is a major change for foreign students studying in Canada. Here is why the change was made, and what it means for International students.

Problems Caused by the 20-Hour Restriction

The 20-hour-a-week work restriction has been causing a number of problems for both International students and Canadian employers. For one thing, many International students have schedules that would comfortably allow them to work more than the previously allotted 20 hours per week. A lot of International students would prefer to work more than 20 hours per week because they are raising children, saving for the future, or supporting family back home. This means that a lot of International students find themselves struggling financially when restricted to 20 hours a week, even if their schedule is flexible enough to allow for more work.

While International students have been struggling with not being permitted to work enough, Canadian employers have been struggling with a staffing shortage. Many companies have been having trouble filling positions and operating efficiently. This means there have been jobs that can’t be filled and International students who would like to fill those jobs but weren’t allowed to take them if they were more than 20 hours per week.

Benefits to Having the Restriction Lifted

Now, with the government’s new changes to the restrictions, International students can work more than 20 hours per week if they would like to. The Canadian government’s hope is for this to help with Canada’s current worker shortage. Now, International students who wish to work more hours will be eligible to fill open positions that would otherwise be left empty.

Lifting the restriction now gives International students more freedom to choose how much they would like to work and take some of the strain off of paying bills, supporting family, and other financial responsibilities. This will benefit both International students and Canadian employers, and allow people to have more control over their finances while getting an education at the same time.

Now is a great time to study in Canada as an International student! Get started with SELC College today.
